Vocal Horizons Chamber Choir announced on Wednesday their first-place achievement in the prestigious 2008 National Kiwanis Music Festival, in the chamber choir category.
Over several months, Vocal Horizons, based in Richmond Hill, competed with choirs from across Canada. Professional adjudicators selected them and the presentation was given in Edmonton recently.
Working closely with educators and parents, the Kiwanis Festival encourages young people to know and love the arts and fosters the values of self-discipline, teamwork and excellence. In addition, the Festival Association supports the further development of the performing arts in Canada and of talented young people through scholarships and performance opportunities.
“The Kiwanis award is one of the premiere awards in Canada, so we’re delighted to have won,” said Hazel Hetimier, executive director of Vocal Horizons. “It’s a tribute to the hours of work that our choir puts in”.
Artistic director Vincent Cheng added: “The quality of this competition is always very good, so it’s especially gratifying to see the choir achieve so much in just a short time. It’s definitely one of the highlights of our 2008 season.”
Vocal Horizons was founded in 2005. A Rhapsody in White CD earned first place at the Kiwanis Festival for chamber choirs.
